MINI WEAVING WORKSHOPs with Deborah Lane
SIX sessions - the series for $100.00 or each for $20.00:
1. PLANNING YOUR FIRST PROJECT: What to do after your beginning weaving class ends! In this workshop, we’ll discuss the process involved in planning your next project, including choosing the yarns, how to determine sett, ascertaining the size your project needs to be on the loom in order for it to be the right size off the loom; as well as other tidbits for the beginning weaver. Plus, we’ll discuss resources available to the weaver, esp. beginning weavers.
2. THE DRAWDOWN: This mini-workshop is all about the rawdown. The drawdown is 1/4 of the draft -- many weavers have difficulty understanding the drawdown. Why is the drawdown so important? Why do you have to understand the drawdown? This class should help you to understand the drawdown.
3. TIPS, TRICKS & TRAPS: This workshop will go over many tips, tricks and traps that the weaver encounters. Tips and tricks to make weaving easier and more fun! Traps that we fall into – and how to get out of them! Bring your questions, your own tips, tricks and traps. We’ll discuss keeping an even tension on your warp as you put it on the loom; maintaining an even beat as you weave; keeping your selvages beautiful; using a temple (or not!); “splitting” the reed; the ongoing discussion of pros and cons of back-to-front vs. front-to-back warping; and tying on new warps to existing warps back-to-front as well as front-to-back, etc.
4. PROFILE DRAFTING: What is the difference between a thread-by-thread draft and a profile draft? What is a profile tie-up? What is a profile treadling? You will see these drafts, tie-ups and treadlings in many weaving pattern books and magazines. This workshop will help you to understand how to read Profiles. Time permitting, we will take the next step and explore creating our own Profiles!
5. DESIGNING with BLOCKS: You’re limited only by your imagination! – What exactly IS a block weave? Lets learn what forms a block weave – how to identify a block weave – and what to do about it once you know what it is.
10:00 AM - 12 NOON; JUNE 23; MONDAY
6. HUCK LACE: A workshop designed to explore the intricacies of huck lace. We’ll learn the basics of single huck, double huck, and triple huck as well as how to design our own huck lace patterns using 4-shafts. From there we’ll explore multi-shaft huck. Learn to create your own huck lace pattern using specially designed graph paper. Adapt an existing huck lace pattern to your parameters (width of loom, number of shafts, etc.); learn how to determine the correct sett and which yarns do and don’t work for lace weave, and why.
